Litigations relevance to industry/audience

Google executives are being sued over a video showing a teen with Down’s Syndrome being bullied. An absolutely horrendous act and one in which no-one could ever condone. However, are the right people being sued? And, is suing the right thing to do?

I’m concerned that litigation like this is ruining the wonderful services being provided free of charge by entities like Google. Plus, in an industry such as ours, is it in fact dampening our creativity? Since starting my design career more than 20 years ago I’ve watched as the demands on us to be more appropriate, cater for this need and that need, not say things we shouldn’t etc etc has increased to a point where political correctness has become a game. Actually… to the point where I really question whether I’m doing the right thing or not by the people we are trying to ‘protect’.

I think there is an argument for directing the responsibility to the right people/person. Surely, the person posting this video is responsible for its content and not the creators of the platform. Perhaps as individuals we should become more aware. Are the people who view this video innocent – I think not, take responsibility for your actions – Vote with your finger and don’t click on the link. Isn’t this what this wonderful thing called the internet is all about?
